Barpeta (Assam): Fifty members of a family were not able to make it to the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list published on August 31.

Ahmad Hussain and his family members, including 7 brothers, are residents of Barpeta district in Assam.

According to Ahmad Hussain, the head of the family, they used their 1951 legacy data along with the other required documents while appealing for the NRC.

Interestingly, the entire family, except a brother of Ahmad Hussain, were included in the draft NRC list issued by the authorities on July 31, 2018.

The excluded brother from the earlier draft NRC was Abdul Baten.

The family had to serve several notices and appeared in four hearings.

During the verification, Abdul Baten used 1966 legacy data of their late father Harmuj Ali Bhuyan, which created confusion and resulted in the exclusion of the family from the NRC list.

Ahmad Hussain, Head of the family

"We have found that not a single member of our family has been listed in the final NRC. There are 50 members in our family. We had used 1951 legacy data of our father. Our family members' name was listed in the earlier draft NRC but one of the brothers' name was not included. When he applied for the second time, he used the 1966 legacy data," said Ahmad Hussain.

"We are frustrated and worried about it. People are now treating us as foreigners. However, we will apply again following the government instructions," he added.

NRC requires every individual to prove that they or their ancestors entered the country before March 24, 1971.

The final list of NRC includes 3.11 crore people while more than 19 lakh have been left out. Those who have been excluded from the NRC have 120 days to appeal against it at Foreigners' Tribunals.
