Telugu Desam Party (TDP) organised protests at all revenue divisional headquarters in the Krishna district on Friday, against the shortage of sand that had a cascading effect on the lives of construction workers. Former minister Kollu Ravindra alleged that under the state government a tractor of sand which earlier cost Rs 2000, now costs Rs 8,000.

Machilipatnam: TDP workers held a protest in front of the Krishna district collectorate on Friday demanding compensation for constructions workers who were without work for the last five months, allegedly due to delay by the YSR-Congress government in rolling out its new sand policy.

Former minister Kollu Ravindra, former MP Narayana, and Krishna party chief Bachula Arjunudu and other TDP leaders also participated in it.

Ravindra and other leaders said that under the state government a tractor of sand which earlier cost Rs 2000, now costs Rs 8,000.

They said that the sand quarries in Andhra Pradesh have been closed for the past few months due to which construction works in the region had almost come to a standstill.

They said that there are nearly 2.5 lakh construction workers who had been left without an income for five months in the district alone.

They demanded a compensation of Rs 50,000 to each worker.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to the district revenue officer at the collectorate.

STORYLINE:
The massive march Zimbabwe's government tried to organise for a new anti-sanctions public holiday appeared to fizzle out on Friday, as just hundreds of people turned out in the capital, instead of the many thousands the ruling party had in mind.
Hundreds more people, including children in school uniform, were bussed to the country's national stadium, where festivities such as a soccer match and an all-night concert were scheduled.
Many seats in the stadium were empty as most Zimbabweans chose to stay away from the event, which had been billed as a mega-festival.
Dozens of Zimbabwean officials, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, have faced years of US and European Union sanctions over alleged human rights violations amid troubled elections and the seizures of white-owned land.
Mnangagwa, who took office after long time leader Robert Mugabe was forced out in late 2017, at first urged the country to "stop mourning" about sanctions.
He has since turned the sanctions into a rallying cry like his predecessor and frequently blames them for the collapsing economy, as hopes fade he will revive the country's fortunes.
The US has denied the sanctions are responsible for the southern Africa country's economic crisis, instead blaming corruption, mismanagement and human rights violations.
