Diesel Loco Shed designs MeD ROBO to assist medical staff in Visakhapatnam

In a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus infection amid the medical staff, Waltair Railway Division's Diesel Loco Shed has designed MeD ROBO for contactless care of COVID patients at Divisional Railway Hospital in Visakhapatnam. The robot operates through a mobile app using an internet connection.

Visakhapatnam: Amid rising cases of coronavirus pandemic across the nation, Diesel Loco Shed of Waltair Railway Division in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam has designed a robot named MeD ROBO to assist hospital staff attending COVID-19 patients.

In the light of global pandemic, various innovations were taken up the by Diesel Loco Shed to contain the spread of infection.

MeD ROBO is created to assist the management of COVID ward without physical contact. They are dedicated towards patient's care and help in serving medicines, food and providing medical accessories or equipment to them. Through this way, doctors, nurses and other medical staff will get protection from the risk.

These robots have gone through extensive trials and demonstrations before being deployed to Divisional Railway Hospital.

MeD ROBO is operated through a unique mobile application using WiFi or internet connection. It has R-BOT support sensor-based feature which is capable to read patients’ body temperature and transmits the same on the display of the mobile phone. In case of any abnormal high-temperature reading, the robot raises an alarm to alert the hospital staff.

  • MeD ROBO has been designed with a remote-controlled driving unit for movement in all directions.
  • It has stainless steel rod and square bars and the body and trays are made of acrylic sheet.
  • The robot has a night vision 2 MP HD camera with speaker facility.
  • It also has a data card facility.
  • There is also a circuit for sensor-based hand sanitiser unit.
  • One KVA backup power for driving motor and camera.
  • Can be monitored through mobile and desktop.

The project was designed under the guidance of Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, Divisional Railway Manager and Santosh Kumar Patro, Sr. Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel) at Waltair.
