Andhra man commits suicide over COVID-19 'suspicion'

In a tragic incident, a 55-year-old man in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district committed suicide over suspicion that he had contracted the novel coronavirus. The man, who had recently returned from Hyderabad feared putting his village at risk, and hanged himself from a tree.

Guntur (Andhra Pradesh): Suspecting of having contracted the coronavirus, a man from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district committed suicide by hanging himself on Saturday.

Akkala Venkataiah (55), a native of Kothapally village, had returned to his village just two days back from Hyderabad.

However, he feared that he had contracted the virus, and was afraid he would infect the entire village. This drove him to take the extreme step today morning.

According to reports, volunteers in the village registered the details of those who had recently returned from Hyderabad on Friday night.

Today morning at around 7 am, Venkataiah made a phone call to his son, Siluvababu and said that he suspected that he had contracted the infection.

Saying that he could put the entire village at risk, Venkataiah instructed his son to just "look at his body from a distance" and then cut the call.

Siluvababu then rushed out of the village, only to find his father's body hanging from a neem tree.

Earlier in February this year, a 50-year-old man from the state's Chittoor district had committed suicide over suspicion of having contracted the novel coronavirus.
