Serie A: Matthijs de Ligt to stay out of action for three months after shoulder surgery

As the Serie A 2020-2021 season is set to commence on September 19, the update on De Ligt means he will be sidelined for the early games of the domestic campaign.

Turin [Italy]: Juventus on Wednesday said that Matthijs de Ligt underwent successful shoulder surgery and will be out of action for 'approximately three months'.

"This morning, Matthijs de Ligt underwent stabilisation surgery on his right shoulder, at the UPMC Salvator Mundi clinic in Rome," the club said in a statement.

"The operation, performed by Dr Volker Musahl, assisted by doctors, Bryson Lesniak and Fabrizio Margheritini and in the presence of Juventus' Head of Medical Department, Luca Stefanini, was a complete success. The estimated recovery time is approximately three months," it added.

Meanwhile, the 2019-2020 season, which was interrupted for three months between March and June because of the coronavirus pandemic, ended on Sunday with Juventus winning the ninth consecutive Scudetto while Inter Milan finished second.

Interestingly, Lazio striker Ciro Immobile matched the record for goals in a Serie A season with 36 courtesy a rule change that led to more penalty kicks.In his last match of the season, Immobile finished off an exchange with Adam Maruic with one-touch midway through the first half of a 3-1 loss at Napoli on Saturday.

Juventus' star striker Cristiano Ronaldo finished second on this season's scoring list with 31 to match Juventus' club record.
