However, the veteran wicket-keeper batsman will play for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 which is scheduled to begin on September 16.
Dhoni was last seen playing for India in 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand on July 9-10 at Old Trafford.
This news has come just a day later after he arrived in Chennai where he and other CSK players will train for a short duration ahead of the IPL 2020 in the UAE.
Dhoni, who made his debut against Bangladesh in 2004 at Chattogram under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, announced his retirement after a year of his last appearance in competitive cricket. He last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semifinal in which the Men in Blues lost the cliffhanger to New Zealand by 18 runs
Despite playing a 72-ball 50-run innings, Dhoni could not save India from the defeat. His bid to take India to the final was ended by Martin Guptill as the Kiwi fielder ran the Indian batsman out at the non-striking end.
All Dhoni fans will now eagerly look forward to the 13th edition of IPL to see the WT20, World Cup and Champions Trophy-winning captain taking to the field breaking a year-long sabbatical from the game.
Under Dhoni's captaincy, CSK won the IPL three times in 2010, 2011 and in 2018, respectively. In the 2019 IPL, Mumbai Indians defeated Dhoni's CSK in the final by one run at Hyderabad's Uppal Stadium.
