Mumbai: Actor Anushka Sharma's debut digital production, the thriller web series Paatal Lok premiered on May 15. Within days of it's streaming on Amazon, the nine-part series is creating ripples on social media. While critics are lauding the thriller, a section of the audience, unpleased with the show's socio-political comment is voicing their opinions on social media.
Anushka's maiden OTT production is inspired by Tarun Tejpal's novel The Story Of My Assassins. Critics are lauding writer-creator Sudip Sharma for going deeper than the novel and creating neo-noir suspense, gruesome gore, fascinating while blending it with mythological allegory.

However, after the release of Paatal Lok, Twitter is flooded with divided opinion where netizens are raising objection over a few scenes.
A scene that has become the talking point has a female cop beating a young woman and asking her if the guy she is with is "friend or client?" while calling her "Nepali wh**e”. The scene, in particular, has apparently hurt the sentiment of the viewers in the Northeast who want the creators to either censor or completely remove that segment.

Netizens are also seeking an apology from Anushka for backing the project.
On the other hand, Paatal Lok is also facing the wrath of keyboard warriors who felt that the web series "has left no stone unturned to defame Hindus," and labelled the content "propagandist."

Divided along class lines, Paatal Lok showcases a gritty, society intertwined in a heinous web of lies, crime and violence. The show has Neeraj Kabi, Gul Panag and Jaideep Ahlawat in key roles.
