Chennai: The audio launch of Tamil superstar Suriya's upcoming film Kaappaan was a starstudded affair where Rajinikanth was the chief guest. At the event, Suriya revealed that his forthcoming film is loosely based on the philosophy of social activist Periyar EV Ramasamy.
At the event, Suriya said that he has an inclination for stories that are set in a new backdrop or deal with something that hasn’t been explored before. The actor said that there is no dearth of inspiration in our society and the glory of unsung heroes motivates him thus he chose to be part of Kaappaan which revolves around the lives of the Special Protection Group (SPG) commandos.
While addressing the audience, Suriya said: "I recently saw a clip that showed how riots broke out after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and how the incident took a religious color. At that time, Periyar said that Godse's gun should be broken."

"According to Periyar, Godse was merely a weapon. Periyar taught us that there is a history behind every incident in the present. Similarly, some interesting things have been shown to happen in this film as well and there is a history behind them," Suriya added.
Suriya also claimed that Kaappaan isn’t a hero-driven film and gives equal, if not more, prominence to other characters.
Besides Suriya, Kaappaan also stars Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who will be seen playing the role of the Prime Minister in the film. The star cast also includes Boman Irani, Sayyeshaa Saigal, Arya and Kiran in pivotal roles.
Kaappaan releases worldwide on September 20.
