As West Bengal gears up for the first phase of polling on Saturday, the Trinamool Congress-led by CM Mamata Banerjee and the saffron party emerge as the main contenders in this election. Though BJP had managed to secure a 10.16 per cent vote share in the 2016 assembly elections, the 2019 Lok Sabha polls had proven to be a breakthrough for the party as it gained 40.25 per cent of the vote share, making an increase of 24 per cent. While the BJP is banking on the sentiment of anti-incumbency in Bengal to repeat its 2019 performance, the TMC is hoping to regain the ground it lost to the BJP.
