Why Married Couples Become Emotionally Distant With Time?

Many times, while living with each other for a long time, emotional distance starts creeping in between couples (husband and wife). Love may not necessarily be lost, but they become so used to being together with each other and bearing all the responsibilities of life and family together that they do not feel the need to express their love for each other. However, as a result, dissatisfaction, frustration and monotony begin to grow in relationships.

After a few years of marriage, many times the couples start feeling emotionally distant and their trust and understanding begin to lessen. Further, this leads to quarrels, arguments, compromises, responsibilities and they might feel suffocated in the relationship.

According to relationship consultant Rachna Maheshwari, when both husband and wife with their partner to think and act like them, the relationship begins to have many issues. In the initial years of marriage, responsibilities are less, couples get a lot of time to spend with each other and they are more sexually active. But, as time passes by, the struggles of day-to-day life, responsibilities, raising children and maintaining relationships with the in-laws, come as a challenge and couples do not get much time for each other.

Changing Relationships With Time

Initially in marriage, couples listen to each other carefully, in order to understand their likes and dislikes and bond with each other. But after a few years, it all seems meaningless to them. This gradually forms an emotional distance between them.

Rachna Maheshwari says that one of the most common complaints that people come up with for her advice is that their spouses do not pay attention to them or they do not feel emotionally connected to them. During the beginning of their marriage, both become emotionally close and respect each other's choices, later when either of their behaviour changes, they begin to feel hurt and many times, they indulge into extramarital affairs.

Communication Is Necessary

Our experts explain that to maintain any relationship, it is very important to have proper communication and conversations and both should try to understand the way a person thinks. If both husband and wife talk to each other openly about everything, problems in their marriage may lessen to a great extent and can be easily resolved.

She says that the advice she gives to most of the people who come to her is to maintain communication with each other and spend quality time together. It is true that for the success of any marriage, mutual harmony with love and trust is also very important. But apart from this, there is another thing which affects the relationship a lot, which is treating each other equally. If the couple understands each other's way of thinking and acting/behaving, and they do not try to change them, the disputes can end to a large extent.

“For example, just like a vehicle runs smoothly on two wheels of equal sizes, marriage also becomes successful with equal efforts of both husband and wife. Imagine if one wheel of the vehicle is big and the other is small, will it run properly?” she asks. That is why treating each other equally is the key, besides proper communication. Understand your spouse’s priority and try to cooperate with them. Also, appreciate the efforts being made by your partner and make them feel their importance in your life. Small efforts from both sides can contribute to a successful marriage.
