COVID-19 Stops The Process By Which Cells Make Energy In The Body

The Coronavirus appears to be multifaceted and it can create myriad dysfunctions. Always tending to mutate itself and becoming more invasive and infective, the Coronavirus reaches every nook and corner of the human body and can create havoc. Let us see how the internal organs cope up with this new threat.

A study at the University of California, Los Angles (UCLA) found that the Coronavirus interferes in the cell energy systems. It mingles in the activity of energy production. Every cell needs energy for survival. This energy is made available by burning carbohydrates in the mitochondria. The living cells are capable of converting carbohydrates into fats or vice versa. Proteins too interchange with carbohydrates and fats. These conversions happen in the liver. These three energy supplying substances (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) are essential for all living beings.

The Coronavirus obstructs the way the cells break down carbohydrates. To find out the mechanism of how Coronavirus interferes in the energy cycle, scientists have infected rats with Coronavirus. This virus could not identify the S2 receptors in the rats and could not infect them. Therefore, they manipulated the genes of the rats and made them virus infected. After the rats are infected, within a period of 7 days they stopped eating and later became very weak and immobile. They lost 20% body weight. It all shows that the living cells inside the rats are not able to produce energy.

Oxygen is a very important and indispensable element in the breakdown of carbohydrates in the mitochondria, the energy house of the cells. In COVID patients, lung capacity to supply enough oxygen is compromised. When the hospital supplies oxygen 3 times the partial pressure of oxygen (in the air) the patient is able to breathe. More than this, it may cause oxygen poison. Therefore, oxygen deficiency is the key factor. When the energy budget is pushed out of balance the disease becomes fatal. The Coronavirus attacks us on our energy budget therefore, the treatment is focused on vitals like respiration and enough catabolism.
