Hyderabad: International No Diet Day is observed on May 6 to encourage people to set aside their diets and enjoy life and teach them to love themselves instead of worrying about their body shape and promote body positivity.

The problem of obesity is increasing among people due to a poor lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. Obesity is considered to be the root cause of all diseases. In such circumstances, when a person becomes prematurely obese, many diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, increased cholesterol, joint pains etc. prematurely take over their bodies.

Amidst these problems, experts advise people to eat a very disciplined diet to control such problems and obesity. Therefore, people often become so attached to the rules of dieting that they forget to enjoy their life. The observance of International No Diet Day allows them to break free from all the rules of eating and drinking for a day to fulfil their wishes and enjoy life. They are taught to discard this idea of correcting the shape of their bodies and accept themselves, and their bodies positively. On this day, people organize various activities and invite close ones to enjoy a hearty meal of their liking.

In 1992, International No Diet Day was observed for the first time. It was started by Mary Evans Young in the United Kingdom. Mary intended that people should not be ashamed of their body shape and should accept themselves as they are, and also to make people aware of the harmful effects of excessive dieting.

Mary Evans Young herself suffered from anorexia, also called anorexia nervosa, a type of eating disorder, which increases the risk of weight gain. In such conditions, a person has misconceptions about weight, and also people suffering from anorexia suffer from problems like loss of appetite and make every effort to control their weight and body shape. Mary started an organization called 'Diet Breakers' and organized the first International No Diet Day through her organization. The day promotes acceptance towards appearance, being proud of your body, and enjoying life to the fullest.
