One of the commonest types of cancer found in men over 40 years of age is Prostate Cancer. As the name suggests, the cancer develops in the prostate gland of men. It is considered to be genetic and if diagnosed on time, its progression can be controlled with the help of various medicines and treatments available. If the condition worsens, the person suffering from prostate cancer may have to face many problems. Although it is a common type of cancer, the information available about it is limited and research is still going on. Our ETV Bharat Sukhibhava team spoke to Dr. Deepak Garg, Urologist, to understand what prostate cancer is, why it develops and how it can be controlled.
What Is Prostate?
Dr. Garg explains that the prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland, located between the male urinary bladder and penis. The main function of this gland is to produce semen, a body fluid, which carries the sperms.
What Is Prostate Cancer?
Dr. Garg explains that prostate cancer is usually considered a genetic disease. The abnormal and malignant growth of cells in the prostate causes a tumor, which is called prostate cancer. Symptoms of this cancer usually appear in men only after the age of 40 years. As men age, their risk of developing prostate cancer also simultaneously increases. Dr. Garg tells us that 8 out of 10 of his patients, who are 80 years old have prostate cancer. At the same time, in men over 70, this figure is 4 out of 10 patients.
Dr. Garg explains that if prostate cancer is detected on time, then with the help of medicines and other treatments, the pace of progression of this disease can be reduced. The treatment depends on various factors, while age and health being the most important ones. If a man is healthy, he can fight the diseases for a long time, no matter what his age is. Whereas, if the person is weak and suffering from other comorbid diseases such as heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure, a disease like prostate cancer can also prove fatal.
Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer
Dr. garg explains that symptoms of prostate cancer vary from person to person. However, people who have a history of cancer in their family and if the following symptoms start appearing after 40 years, then they should consult a doctor and get screened for cancer immediately. Symptoms include:
- Trouble in starting urination
- Impeded flow of urine
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Difficulty emptying the bladder completely
- Pain or burning sensation in urination
- Blood in urine or semen
- Pain in ejaculation
Prostate Cancer Test
Dr. Garg explains that prostate cancer is tested through physical examination, health status and other tests, which are as follows:
- Digital rectal tests
This is a common test to examine the prostate. The prostate is an internal organ, so it cannot be seen directly. To do this, the doctor examines the rectum to see if any solid lumps have developed.
- Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
PSA is a protein produced in the prostate, which is examined with the help of blood test.
- Prostate biopsy
A small part of the prostate is removed and examined for biopsy. After biopsy, a Gleason score is given. The score shows in which category, the prostate cancer cells are categorised by the pathologist.
Preventing Prostate Cancer
The risk of prostate cancer or any other diseases reduce when one follows a healthy and disciplined lifestyle and diet. The things that should be kept in mind for a good and healthy life are:
- Eat a healthy diet: As far as possible, consume fresh, nutritious and easy to digest food. Include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. They are rich in many vitamins and minerals, which are good for health. Try and avoid foods loaded with fats and spices.
- Exercise Regularly: A regular exercise routine can not only prevent prostate cancer, but many other diseases. It keeps the body healthy and enhances the immunity. It has been found that men who do not exercise have a higher PSA level, which also increases their risk of prostate cancer, while men who exercise are at a lower risk.
Therefore, a healthy lifestyle can protect men from prostate cancer. However, in your 40s, if any of the aforementioned symptoms are seen, consult a doctor immediately, so that timely treatment can be given to control the worsening of the condition.
