People use all types of contraceptives methods to avoid unwanted pregnancy, but using condoms is considered the most effective and easiest solution. Condoms not only prevent unwanted pregnancies, but they also protect against many sexually transmitted diseases like STDs. As soon as we hear the word condom, all we think about male condoms, but did you know that women too can use a condom? Most of you may not be aware of it, female condoms are also easily available in the market. Not only men but a large number of women too are unaware of its existence. But why is it so? Let’s learn more about it.

Lack Of Awareness

Generally, all the adults who have an active physical relationship, are aware of the benefits of condoms and how to use them. Apart from this information about condoms of various brands and different types can be easily gained from broadcast advertisements and by simply walking into a chemist shop. But due to lack of publicity, many people have no knowledge about the availability or even the existence of female condoms. With the help of female condoms, women can protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and all diseases.

Common Difference Between Male and Female Condom

Male Condom

  • The male condom is made of latex, polyurethane, or polyisoprene. It can be worn only when the penis is stimulated.
  • Since the male condom is made of latex, it can also cause skin allergies.
  • It covers most of the penis and protects women's genitals.
  • A male condom can slip off itself after sexual activity or after the stimulation of the penis is over.

Female Condom

  • A female condom is made of polyurethane or nitrile and it can be worn 8 hours prior to having a physical relationship.
  • It is like a lubricating pouch with two rings on its ends, which helps in placing the condom in the right place inside the vagina. The inner rings of female condoms have to be inserted inside the vagina exactly like tampons.
  • Female condom covers both the inner and outer parts of a woman's genitals and the base of the penis provides protection.
  • Female condoms are hypoallergenic, this means that they are less likely to be allergic.
  • Female condom does not move from its place even after having sex.

Precautions To Be Taken While Using Condom

  • Never use cracked, torn, colourless, or sticky condoms. They can be defective and useless.
  • Do not keep condoms in your wallet or in the car for a long time.
  • Keep the condom in a cool and dry place away from sunlight and heat. Latex condoms tend to deteriorate quickly if not stored properly.
  • Men should choose condoms according to their penis size, this reduces the risk of the condom breaking or slipping during sex.
  • During sex, if the condom breaks or tears or the outer ring of the female condom goes inside the vagina, then remove that condom and use new condom.
  • Use a condom only once, do not make the mistake of using it again by rinsing or cleaning it. Doing so can cause infection.
  • Take care when wearing condoms, otherwise, your nails or jewelry can break it.
  • Use only one type of condom at a time. Never use female condoms and male condoms together.
  • After using the condom, throw it in the garbage bin. Never flush the condom.

Therefore, condoms made for men and women have their own advantages and disadvantages. However, the best part of it is that both types of condoms help in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms are one of the best contraceptive methods to avoid pregnancies and STD’s and enjoy tension-free sex.
