Raghunathganj (West Bengal): In a shocking incident, a woman threw her six-month-old son into the Ganges following a family conflict here on Monday. The child was somehow rescued thanks to the efforts of the eyewitnesses. The infant is currently admitted to the hospital.
However, the doctors said that his condition is critical. The incident happened at the Jangipur Bhagirathi Bridge of Raghunathganj Police Station in Murshidabad on Monday morning. The accused woman was arrested by the Raghunathganj police station. According to the police, the woman is mentally depressed.
It is learned that the woman climbed the bridge with the baby in her lap on Monday morning. Seeing him wandering around on the bridge, some people got suspicious. Before they could catch the woman, the woman threw the baby in her arms in the blink of an eye. At that time a ferry was crossing by the side of that bridge.
Two young men immediately jumped into the Ganges and rescued the child with the help of the ferryman. Somehow the child survived. He is currently under treatment at Jangipur Divisional Hospital. The Raghunathganj police station cops rushed to the spot on receiving the information. The child's mother (name withheld) has been arrested. She resides in Mohaldarpara of Raghunathganj police station. The police suspect that the woman is mentally unstable.
The police of Raghunathganj police station are investigating the whole matter. A rescuer Rajkumar Mahat said, "We were four or five friends talking in the temple at the bank of the Ganges. Suddenly I heard something falling in the water. At first, I thought it might be a sack. I looked up and saw a crowd on the bridge.
"I saw the child floating. I immediately jumped into the water. After throwing her son, the woman also tried to jump into the Ganga. But a lot of people had gathered on the bridge and stopped her." According to family sources, there was turmoil in the family for quite some time. The woman was suffering from depression due to a souring relationship with her husband. Family sources revealed the woman tried to end her life earlier as well. The arrested woman is being taken to the Jangipur Sub-Divisional Court.
