Amid Covid surge, Modi, Shah hold rallies in West Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah hold multiple election rallies in poll-bound West Bengal amidst the increasing number of coronavirus cases. The COVID-19 tally in West Bengal mounted to 6,43,795 on Friday after the highest- single-day spike of 6,910 new cases was reported in the state.

New Delhi: At a time when record number of Covid-19 cases are reported in the country every single day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are holding multiple election rallies in poll-bound West Bengal on Saturday.

Modi will address election rallies in Asansol and Gangarampur while Amit Shah will take part in a roadshow in Amdanga and public meetings in Chapra and Ausgram.

Meanwhile, polling for the fifth phase of West Bengal assembly elections is underway across 45 assembly segments amid tight security.

Over one crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to decide the political fate of 342 candidates.

Security measures have been heightened for the fifth phase in view of the violence in the previous phase, which witnessed the death of five people in Cooch Behar district, including four in CISF firing.

On Friday, West Bengal recorded the highest- single-day spike of 6,910 new cases.

The death toll in the state rose to 10,506 after 26 fresh fatalities were registered in the last 24 hours.
