Kolkata: Trinamool Congress is now all set to carry forward its success in inducting former Congress MP Sushmita Deb within the party by making a major dent in the Assam unit of Congress. As many as 25 Congress leaders in Barak Valley of Assam have resigned from the Congress and they are likely to join Trinamool Congress within the next couple of days.

Sushmita Deb, who is reaching Assam on Thursday, is perceived as the main medium for Trinamool Congress to make a dent in Assam Congress. When contacted by ETV Bharat, Deb confirmed the development. "This happened in Barak Valley. The office-bearers of Congress though have resigned from Congress, are yet to join Trinamool. I am going to Assam tomorrow. Actually, they wanted to receive me at the airport even before their resignation. But I told them that it would not be right from the Congress party perspective. So they all resigned," Deb told ETV Bharat.

When asked whether there is any possibility of her officially heading and supervising the Assam unit of Trinamool Congress, she said that she did not join Trinamool Congress with any condition. "Whatever role the party chooses for me, I will accept. As of now, there had been no talk on specifics. I have just committed my service to the party," Deb said.

When asked whether her joining Trinamool Congress would hamper the ongoing process of both Congress and Trinamool Congress coming closer to each other at the national level as a part of the united anti-BJP platform, she said that this thought is an overestimation of her exit. "The larger picture that is emerging in the country reflects the mood of the nation. Modiji's popularity is going down. That is a far bigger issue. I think that my exit will not compromise on that," she said.

When asked about the prospects of Trinamool Congress in the Tripura assembly elections next year, Deb said in the next elections BJP has absolutely no chance. She said that the people of Tripura gave BJP a unique chance and they did not deliver anything. "The kind credibility and image that Mamata Banerjee has developed over decades and especially after the last West Bengal elections results, all political parties, except BJP, have realised that Trinamool Congress will be the only political force that can be relied upon," she said.

When asked who would be Trinamool Congress's principal contender in Tripura polls next year - BJP or Left Front? Deb said that it will definitely be a straight contest between Trinamool and BJP and no other political party will matter.
