Jim Corbett National Park has set up a plaque at its entrance to accord 'martyr' status to its workers who sacrificed their lives while protecting the animals residing in the forested wildlife sanctuary.

Ramnagar: The Jim Corbett National Park administration has accorded 'martyr' status to its personnel who sacrificed their lives while protecting the animals residing in the forested wildlife sanctuary. As a mark of respect, the park, known for housing Royal Bengal tigers, has put up a plaque with the names of those martyr workers at the Dhangarhi gate, the entrance gate of the park, so that the tourists visiting the sanctuary may also get a chance to know them.

According to officials, from 1982 to 2019, about 12 forest workers made their supreme sacrifice in the service of Jim Corbett National Park. Most of them were killed while protecting the park while others were killed in the attack by wild animals including tigers, leopards and elephants.

The plaque engraves the names of Deputy Ranger Vipin Chandra Pandey, Forest Constable Mussadi Singh Chauhan, Cuckoo Hawal, Rajesh Negi, Daily Wager Deewani Ram, Rakesh Kumar, Krishna Pal Singh, Hari Ram, Veer Singh, Prithvipal Singh, Sohan Singh and Vishan Ram.

Talking to ETV Bharat, Jim Corbett National Park Director Rahul Kumar informed that the sanctuary is a tiger-dominated area and national park staff, daily wagers, forest guards staff of Operation Monsoon, staff of Operation Lot constantly patrol the region through vehicles as well as on foot.

"During the forest fire season, the personnel also contribute in extinguishing the flames and at times sustains major injuries. This martyr plaque at the park's entrance is in the memory of those who were killed in the service of Jim Corbett National Park," Rahul Kumar said.
