12th century old Shiva Temple discovered in Chekuni Village, Uttrakhand

The locals of Chekuni Village have uncovered an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva dating back to the Chand dynasty. The temple is designed in Panchaytan architectural style. The wall of the temple has an inscription that dates to 1298 AD.

Champawat: The locals of Chekuni Village have uncovered an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva dating back to the Chand dynasty. Chekuni village used to be a part of the mythological Kurma Nagri (Vishnu Puran). The village was also a part of Kumaon's Chand dynasty kingdom. The temple is designed in Panchaytan architectural style. The wall of the temple has an inscription that dates to 1298 AD. The locals have also uncovered several artefacts dating between the 12 and 13 centuries.

According to historian, Dr Prashant Joshi, priceless and rare artefacts, statues and remnants of the temple have been discovered due to the tireless efforts of the local villagers. He further added that these recent discoveries will help the students and researchers, involved in studying the local history.
