Hardoi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Open Defecation Free (ODF) campaign seems to have failed in Hardoi as hundreds of women have not been eating lunch for the past four years to avoid going to the toilet in the day time.

This is being done to shame the administration by women of Naya village and other two villages of Pranbahar Gram Sabha, the locals said.

Over 500 women had pledged to give up one of their meals to highlight the indifference of the district authorities in providing toilet facilities in the villages of the district, they said.

The women believe that if they do not eat lunch, they would not have to go to the toilet during the day.

However, the district administration is yet to respond to their demand of getting the toilet built in the villages.

The disabled, aged and the young women of the village have been avoiding their meals demanding the very basic amenity.

The women say that they would continue to protest in their unique way until the toilets are built in all the houses of the villages.

Meanwhile, the district administration has said that toilets were built in various villages of the district and if some people still need the facility, it would be provided soon.

"Toilets were provided to the identified beneficiaries as per the target set in the district. We have asked for more funds so that toilets could be constructed for those who were left out. Soon they will also benefit from this scheme on the basis of their eligibility," District Magistrate, Hardoi Avinash Kumar said.
