Hardoi (Uttar Pradesh): Several women residing in Gurgujja - a remote village in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi didtrict - have been forced to silently adopt a rule - skip meals to avoid the need to relieve themselves owing to the unavailability of toilets.

Though the central government claims to have built toilets across the country under its much-hyped Swacch Bharat Mission, the plight of these starving women in Gurgujja has gone unnoticed by the authorities concerned.

When contacted by ETV Bharat, Gajendra Kumar, District magistrate, said, "A complaint has been received in this regard. A team will be constituted to identify the rightful beneficiaries of the various schemes and it would be ensured that they get the benefits of the schemes."

The majority of the population in the village are daily wage earners, and they can't afford to build toilets on their own, making them dependent on government schemes for the same.

Despite applying for the construction of toilets, the villagers did not receive any response from the village pradhan and authorities concerned.

In addition to the lack of toilets, the residents of this village have not received assistance under governments housing schemes despite being eligible for the same.

The villagers alleged that they were only provided Rs 2,500 for the construction of their houses. However, no further assistance was provided to them through government housing schemes.

The majority of people are residing in dilapidated houses in the village.

Hardoi: What are side effects of not having a toilet in the house? Whenever this topic is raised it eventually dies down in between talks of Swaachtaa Abhiyaan and Respect. What can household without toilets do is a bigger question. Women from Gurgujja village of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh have found a rather peculiar solution to this question. Most women of the village skip meals with the fear of the need to use a toilet.

On one hand the Government is propagating house for everyone and swaachtaa mission to every person, on the other hand the women of Gurgujja village in Hardoi have started skipping a meal a day. The plight of the women unfortunately has gone unnoticed by their family as well as the local administration. Majority of the population in the village is dependant on manual labour to earn their daily bread. Hence as soon as the issue of closed toilets comes up they look up to government schemes. The village is dependant on government schemes for construction of toilets but unfortunately the village still hasn’t made it to the list of local administration.

As of date the condition of the Gurgujja village should raise concerns amongst the administration. The villagers have have applied several times for a toilet but the village pradhan has been unable to do the needful till date.

On the other hand these villagers are also miles away from the comfort of government residential schemes. The village which has population of thousands still has majority of its inhabitants residing in dilapidated houses. To make the matters worse the villagers tell that on the name of providing houses they have even paid 2,500 rupees but till date there is no progress on the case. How the government schemes lose their sheen on ground is clearly evident in Gurgujja village.

City Magistrate Gajendra Kumar told ETV Bharat that a complaint has been received with this regard. A team would be constituted to identify the rightful beneficiaries of the various schemes and it would be ensured that they get the benefits of the schemes.
