UP to crackdown on liquor mafia

Taking serious cognizance of deaths caused by spurious liquor in the past, the Uttar Pradesh government also registered 3421 cases by identifying 586 liquor mafias and arrested more than 534 accused so far. The government also attached the properties worth more than 13 crores of 101 liquor mafias.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government is going to be tough on liquor mafias, who are still engaged in making and selling spurious and poisonous liquor in the state. In this connection, the state government also amended the Excise Act to hang the criminals guilty of making spurious liquor in the state.

Taking serious cognizance of the deaths caused by spurious liquor in the past, the Yogi government also registered 3,421 cases by identifying 586 liquor mafias and arrested more than 534 accused so far. The government also attached the properties worth more than 13 crores of 101 liquor mafias.

According to Sanjay Bhusreddy, Principal Secretary, Excise Department, 2807 cases have been registered against the liquor mafia from 26 August to 5 September this year.

Along with this, 73,660 litres of illicit liquor have also been seized.

In Aligarh alone, 87 accused were sent to jail in the case in May and action was taken against 73 accused under the Gangster Act in nine cases. Assets worth more than 70 crores 71 lakh have been seized from the liquor mafia and the process of confiscation of property worth more than one crore 59 lakh rupees continues.

Also, the history sheet of 80 liquor smugglers has been opened.
