UP rape survivor battling for life after being set ablaze; reached Safdarjung hospital

उत्तर प्रदेश के उन्नाव जिले में एक युवती से दुष्कर्म के बाद उसे जिंदा जला दिया गया. फिलहाल पुलिस ने युवती को जिला अस्पताल भेज दिया है, जहां उसकी हालत गंभीर बनी हुई है. पुलिस ने तीन आरोपियों को गिरफ्तार कर लिया है.

Dedicated ICU provided to Unnao rape survivor says, medical superintendent

A rape survivor, who sustained critical injuries after she was allegedly set ablaze in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh, was on Thursday brought to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi for medical treatment. 

"We have set up a dedicated ICU under the observation of Dr Shalab Kumar - Head of Burn and Plastic Surgery at Safdarjung hospital," hospital medical superintendent Dr Sunil Gupta had said adding that all the preparations for her treatments have been made.

The woman, who has suffered about 90 per cent of extensive burn injuries, was first referred to a Lucknow hospital from Unnao and then was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for proper medical treatment.

A rape victim in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh, who sustained critical injuries after she was allegedly set ablaze by five men on Thursday morning, is being transported to Delhi for medical treatment.

"Our priority is to ensure the health of the victim. The administration has decided to avail the best possible arrangements for the victim. Arrangements have been made to take her to Delhi via air ambulance for medical treatment," Inspector-General (law and order) Praveen Kumar told a news agency.

Speaking about the arrangement, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Purnendra Singh said, "The girl was referred to a Delhi hospital on Thursday. We have arranged for a green corridor to the airport. We are estimating that it will take around 32 minutes to reach the airport from the hospital. Around 100 officers are working for the same."

The IG said all the accused have been arrested in the matter as per the statement of the victim.

"The accused have been identified as Shubham, Shivam, Harishankar, Umesh and Ram Kishore. The investigation is underway in a speedy manner," Kumar added.

He said that two cases were filed in the alleged rape case.

"One case was filed in Rae Bajreli's Lal Ganj police station and the other was filed in Unnao's Bihar police station. According to the FIR, the victim had alleged that the accused raped her under the pretext of marriage," Kumar said.

He said that the accused were granted bail by the court despite strong opposition from the police.

Earlier today, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had taken cognizance of the incident and said that the treatment of the victim will be carried out on government expenses and strict action will be taken against the accused.

On the other hand, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal expressed sadness over the incident and questioned the governments 'how long will such incidents keep taking place in the country'.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday questioned the claims of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath on the law and order situation after a rape victim was set on fire in Unnao.

"Yesterday the home minister of the country and the Uttar Pradesh chief minister clearly lied that law and order in Uttar Pradesh has become better. Seeing such incidents everyday angers the mind. BJP leaders should now come out of false propaganda," Gandhi said in a tweet.

The Congress leader also tagged a news report of the incident in which a rape victim from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh was allegedly set ablaze early on Thursday morning by five men.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal on Thursday expressed sadness over the incident of a rape survivor being set ablaze by the accused in Unnao and questioned the governments that for how long will such incidents keep taking place in the country.

Maliwal who is on an indefinite hunger strike said, "We got to know that today in Unnao, the rapist of a girl burnt her while she was going to court. Till how long such incidents will keep taking place? If the central government will remain silent then how this country will be run?"

"I am on indefinite hunger strike and today is the third day. Till the time a strong system is not formed in the country where the rapist gets punishment, I won't eat anything. Last time when I protested after 10 days, a law was formed. Now we have laws but implementation is not there. I am here to implement those laws," she said.

"I appeal to the people to come and join the protest. This is the fight to do or die," the DCW chief said.

"If the government does it work properly then there is no need to do protest and hunger strike. I appeal to the Prime Minister to hold an emergency meeting of all the chief ministers of the states and discuss the demands of the Delhi Women Commission and take a decision on it," she added.

A rape survivor was set ablaze in the Bihar area of Uttar Pradesh's Unnao on Thursday morning. The victim has been referred to Lucknow, said Vikrant Vir, Superintendent of Police, Unnao.

"The victim has been referred to a hospital in Lucknow for better treatment. We have rounded up the three accused, search for the other two is underway. The victim had earlier filed a rape case, one accused in that case has also been rounded up," Vir told media here.

Unnao rape survivor has 90 per cent burn, is 'very serious': Doctors

The Unnao rape survivor has 90 per cent burn injuries and her condition is "very serious", doctors attending on her said.

"She has 90 per cent burn injuries. She was in a lot of pain," civil hospital director Dr DS Negi said.

"The condition of the girl who was set on fire and bought here at 10 am is very serious. A team of doctors are observing her," Dr Ashutosh Dubey added.

Asked about the possibility of shifting her to another hospital outside Lucknow, he said, "I can't say about this. Our doctors are on the job."

NCW seeks report from UP police after rape survivor set ablaze

The NCW sought a detailed action taken report from the Uttar Pradesh police over the incident. In a letter to DGP OP Singh, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma also sought a detailed report regarding the number of reported heinous crimes committed against women and bail granted in such cases in the last three years.

Sharma said the commission is "disturbed" by the rise in crimes against women in the state despite the enactment of several laws to safeguard the rights of women.

Opposition hits out at Yogi govt

The Samajwadi Party and the Congress attacked the ruling Yogi Adityanath government over the incident.

"Yesterday the home minister of the country and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister lied that law and order in Uttar Pradesh has become good. Seeing such incidents everyday leads to anger...," Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, adding that BJP leaders should now stop false propaganda.

The SP condemned the BJP government and demanded the resignation of the DGP.

"The attempt to set ablaze the rape victim is result of prevailing 'jungleraj' in UP. CM should be ashamed and DGP should resign. There should be no drama but strict action should be taken and best treatment and security should be provided to the victim," the party said in a tweet in Hindi.

Unnao (UP): A rape survivor from Unnao was battling for life on Thursday after five men, including two of the accused who are out on bail, allegedly set her on fire while she was on her way to court, police said. All five men have been arrested.

The woman -- who was raped in December last year -- received 60-70 per cent burn injuries and is being treated in a government hospital in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police OP Singh said. 

The woman, who survived the sexual assault a year ago, said in her statement that she was on her way from her village in Unnao district to Rae Bareli where the trial is going on when she was attacked and set ablaze early on Thursday morning.

In a chilling recap of the incident, she said in her statement to Sub Divisional Magistrate Dayashankar Pathak that she was going to Rae Bareli to pursue her case. When she reached the Gaura turn, near her home, Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi, Umesh Bajpai, Shivam Trivedi and Shubham Trivedi attacked her and set her afire.

She alleged that Shivam and Shubham Trivedi had abducted and raped her in December 2018. However, the FIR was registered in March.

Aflame, she ran for a while before eyewitnesses saw her and informed police, which sent her to the Community Health Centre from where she was sent to the district hospital before being referred to Lucknow, police said.
