Third gender children get right to inherit family property in UP

The government has amended the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code of 2006 under which persons of the third gender will be recognised as members of a landowner's family and will have an equal right to inherit agricultural property.

Lucknow: With the Yogi Adityanath government amending the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code of 2006, transgenders, recognised as the 'third gender' by the Supreme Court, will now have the right to inherit family property, including agricultural land, in the state.

The government has amended the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code of 2006 under which persons of the third gender will be recognised as members of a landowner's family and will have an equal right to inherit agricultural property.

A draft proposal for the law was submitted by the State Law Commission to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in March 2019.

Earlier, all inheritance laws mentioned 'sons', 'daughters', 'married', 'unmarried' and 'widow' and kept the third gender children out of the purview of it.

The new Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code will include people of the third gender as members of the landowner's family to give them succession and physical rights over the property.
