SIT reaches Hathras to probe gang-rape case

The three-member Special Investigative Team (SIT), led by Home Secretary, Bhagwan Swarup, reached Hathras last evening and began its probe into the Hathras gang-rape incident.

Hathras (Uttar Pradesh): The three-member Special Investigative Team (SIT) formed to probe the Hathras gang-rape incident, reached the district late on Wednesday.

Swarup said that the team has started preliminary investigation

The SIT, led by Secretary home, Bhagwan Swarup, reached the Chandpa Police station late last evening, and examined files and documents related to the case.

Speaking to reporters, Swarup said that the team has started preliminary investigation, and would finish the entire investigation in the allotted seven days and hand over its report to the administration.

On being asked about the people to be questioned in connection with the matter, Swarup said that the list includes many policemen, but the investigation will be "dynamic".

"There are many people, records to be examined. It is dynamic. In the coming days some new evidence might also pop up," he said.

Earlier yesterday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath constituted a three-member SIT to probe the Hathras gang-rape incident which has sparked outrage.

Secretary home, Bhagwan Swarup, will lead the SIT and DIG, Chandraprakash, and commandant PAC Agra, Poonam, will be its members. The SIT has been asked to submit its report in seven days time.

A 19-year-old woman was brutally gang-raped in a village in Hathras district two weeks ago. She died of her grievous injuries at a Delhi hospital on Tuesday, prompting outrage, protests and calls for justice.
