Rampur (Uttar Pradesh): A special court in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur on Wednesday awarded the death penalty to the accused in the rape-murder of a six-year-old girl in the district earlier this year.
According to reports, the victim had gone missing from outside her house on May 7 and her decomposed body was recovered from a dilapidated building one-and-a-half months later on June 22.
The accused, Nazil, was arrested by the police following an encounter on the day the victim's body was recovered. He had sustained bullet injuries on both his legs in the cross-firing.
Government lawyer Kumar Saurav informed that the trial began in the court on September 5, and the accused was proven guilty of the crime on December 13.

He was found guilty under Sections 302, 361, and 376 B of the IPC along with the POCSO Act.
Saurav added that he had argued for death penalty for the accused as it was to be seen as a 'rarest-of-the-rare' case. The motive of rape was clear and the victim knew the accused, he added.
Rampur superintendent of police Ajay Pal Sharma said that the cops displayed full teamwork as they collected the comprehensive evidence and presented it in court, along with conducting a proper scientific investigation.
"This will definitely send a good message to the public," he said.
