NCERT textbook sparks controversy in Uttar Pradesh

A case of teaching wrong information about Hindu epic Mahabharata has sparked controversy in Gorakhpur's Kendriya Vidyalaya. It is written in this book that Jarasandha defeated Sri Krishna in battle, so the later left Mathura and went to Dwarka.

Gorakhpur: Yet another textbook in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur school has sparked a controversy as it interpreting the wrong piece of information regarding the largest epic 'Mahabharat'.

It is written in this book that Jarasandha defeated Sri Krishna in battle, so the later left Mathura and went to Dwarka.

According to reports, the book named 'Bal Mahabharata Katha' is being taught in Kendriya Vidyalaya as a supplementary textbook of Hindi to Class 7 children. This book is an abridged version of Chakravarti Rajagopalachari's 'Mahabharata Katha.

Following this, Hindu religion scholars said that such false information leads to controversy.

Meanwhile, speaking to ETV Bharat, Professor Rajwant Rao, Department of History, University of Gorakhpur said, "The information regarding Sri Krishna's defeat was not mentioned in Mahabharata. The facts stated in this book of Bal Mahabharata Katha have been falsified."

"The 67th verse of the 14th chapter of the beginning of the Rajyus Yajna in the Mahabharata. It mentions the slaughter of Jarasandha by Bhima but nowhere it mentioned Jarasandha's victory over Sri Krishna," he said.

Lalmani Tiwari, Manager of the Gita Press also said that nowhere in the original Mahabharata depicts Lord Sri Krishna's defeat.

"All the leelas of Lord Shri Krishna are described in Prem Sudha Sagar. Studies in this book state that he left Mathura and resided in Dwarka after defeating Jarasandha. Between pages, number 207 to 209 of Prem Sudha Sagar describes that Lord Krishna defeated Jarasandha. But the NCERT book has interpreted the wrong one and it should be changed," said Sarvajit Pandey, in charge, Geeta Press, Gorakhpur.
