Moradabad: The Moradabad police in Uttar Pradesh have registered their first case under the newly-implemented anti-conversion law, accusing a Muslim man of forcibly marrying a Hindu girl.
The incident was reported from Kanth police station limits where a girl's mother alleged that a Muslim man named Rashid forcibly married her daughter.
The members of Bajrang Dal also alleged that Rashid is absconding after marrying the girl.
However, the girl, named Pinki, said that she was not forced and married to Rashid willingly in July.
"I am a 22-year-old girl and I can very well take my decisions. I married Rashid out of my will and no one forced me to do so," said Pinki.
Speaking on the issue, Vidya Sagar, Dehat's Superintendent of Police, said the police registered a case under the new law based on the girl's mother complaint.
"We have registered a case and further investigating the matter. We will be able to give further details once the investigation gets over," he added.
Uttar Pradesh government recently approved the ordinance, Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Bill 2020, that seeks to bar forceful religious conversions for marriage.
The law provides for an imprisonment of 1 to 5 years and a fine of Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000 under different categories.
