Speaking to reporters during his dharna outside the Vidhan Sabha, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav said, "This is an extremely condemnable incident. This is a black day. It is not the first such incident under this BJP Government. Chief Minister had said in this very assembly, "apradhiyon ko thok diya jayega (culprits will be eliminated)." But they could not save the life of a daughter."

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rushed to Unnao to meet the family of the rape victim who succumbed to severe burns in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.

The Congress general secretary has left for Unnao to meet the family and extend condolences to them, Congress sources were quoted by news agencies.

Priyanka Gandhi blames UP govt for not giving security to Unnao victim

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday questioned the Uttar Pradesh government as to why the Unnao gang rape victim was not given security keeping in mind a similar incident that took place earlier in the same district.

In a tweet, she said: "Why the victim of Unnao gangrape case was not given security keeping in mind an earlier incident of Unnao? What action has been taken on the police official who refused to register an FIR? What steps are being taken by the government to stop crime against the women, which take place on a daily basis?"

Condemning the incident, Uttar Pradesh Justice Minister Brajesh Pathak said, "It is saddening that the victim is no more with us today. We will appeal to the concerned court today to take this case to fast track court. We will also appeal to hear the case on a day to day basis.

Reacting on reports of 86 rapes in last 11 months in Unnao, Pathak added, "These cases should not be politicised. We will not spare the culprits, however powerful they may be. We will take strictest action."
