Journalist shot in Ghaziabad passes away; Opposition slams Yogi government

Vikram Joshi, the journalist who was shot by assailants in Ghaziabad on July 20, has succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Nine persons have been nabbed by the police in this matter so far, while efforts at arresting another accused are underway.

Ghaziabad: Journalist Vikram Joshi who was shot at in Ghaziabad's Vijay Nagar area on July 20, has succumbed to his injuries at a hospital here on Wednesday. Joshi had received a bullet injury on his head.

The doctor monitoring Joshi said that the veins in the journalist's head had got badly damaged due to the bullet injury.

Vikram Joshi was reportedly shot at by some assailants on Monday night in Ghaziabad.

"Nine people have been arrested including two main accused, Ravi and Chotu. An illegal weapon was also seized from their possession," said Kalanidhi Naithani, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad.

The other accused have also been identified, namely as Mohit, Dalveer, Akash aka Lulli, Yogendra, Abhishek Hakla, Abhishek Mota and Shakir. Efforts at nabbing another accused- Ashok are underway.

The incident occurred days after Joshi had filed a complaint with Vijay Nagar Police Station stating that some men were harassing his niece.

The miscreants opened fire at Joshi, near his residence, he had suffered a bullet injury on his head.

The whole incident was captured in the CCTV camera.

A station in-charge was suspended after the family of the journalist alleged inaction by police.

Joshi's brother, Aniket Joshi said, "A few men were harassing his niece a few days ago and my brother had opposed it and also filed a police complaint."

"We were informed that a journalist was shot in Vijay Nagar following which he was admitted to Yashodha Hospital here," said SSP Ghaziabad.

"Some boys Kamal-ud-Din’s son(Ravi) used to eve-tease my sister. It was her birthday when the incident occurred. My uncle was coming home with her when the assailants attacked him and shot him. We'll not accept my uncle's body till main accused is caught," said Vikram's nephew.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rupees 10 lakhs and a job to Joshi's wife.

Condoling Joshi's death, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said that the incident was shocking. She also termed Vikram Joshi as a fearless journalist.

Meanwhile, attacking the state government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said 'Wada tha Ram raj ka, de diya gunda raj'.

"Journalist Vikram Joshi was murdered for opposing eve-teasing of his niece. My condolences are there with the grieving family. They had promised Ram Raj, but gave us Gunda raj," he wrote in a tweet in Hindi.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also attacked the Uttar Pradesh government over the law-and-order situation in the state after Joshi was shot at in Ghaziabad.

The Congress general secretary has been attacking the Yogi Adityanath government over the law and order in UP.
