Uttar Pradesh: By-polls for Sadar Assembly seat in Hamirpur has begun amidst tight security in the area.
According to the district returning officer Abhishek Prakash, the polling began at 7 am and will continue till 5 in the evening.
There are 257 polling stations with 476 polling booths set up for voting. 52 stations have also been provided with web-casting facilities.
"Four zonal magistrates, 36 sector magistrates and 10 static magistrates have been deployed to ensure free and fair polls," Prakash added.
A total of 4,01,497 voters will exercise their vote for the purpose.
BJP has fielded Yuvraj Singh as the party's electoral candidate and Hardeep Nishad has been fielded by Congress. Naushad Ali and Manoj Prajapati are candidates from BSP and Samajwadi Party respectively. The candidate from CPI is Jamal Alam Mansori.
A total of 9 candidates are contesting the by-bolls, counting the independent candidates and the ones from political parties.
Paramilitary forces have been deployed at these stations for security purposes.
The by-poll is being conducted after the disqualification of BJP MLA Ashok Singh Chandel. He was convicted in a murder case in May.
