Farmers fear financial distress as locusts attack Uttar Pradesh's  Jaunpur

Farmers across Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh are fearing a huge financial loss as swarms of locusts have attacked the city posing a great threat to the cultivated crops.

Lucknow: Swarms of locusts attacked several villages in Jaunpur city of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, an official said. "Farmers have been bothered across the state. These swarms of locusts have damaged many crops in the area thereby posing a great financial challenge to farmers," said Jayprakash, Deputy Director of Agriculture.

"During the entire phase of corona-induced nationwide lockdown, farmers suffered a great loss in vegetable cultivation and to compensate for the loss, maize cultivation was put into practice.The situation now seems challenging after locusts' attack; local authorities have been extending all possible help," Jayprakash added.

Locust swarms from Pakistan have entered Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh threatening major damage to standing cotton crops and vegetables.

The desert locust is a species of locust, a swarming short-horned grasshopper. They are known to devour everything in their path, posing an unprecedented threat to food supply and livelihoods of millions of people.
