Ex-UP DGP terms Vikas Dubey encounter 'unfortunate'

Speaking to ETV Bharat, former Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prakash Singh stated that the facts of the encounter are not known. He termed the encounter of gangster Vikas Dubey "unfortunate", and added that it is too early and too immature to comment on the merits of the encounter.

New Delhi: Former Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prakash Singh on Friday termed the encounter of gangster Vikas Dubey "unfortunate" and said that if the police had made full proof arrangements for the transportation of him then this kind of mishap would have not happened.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Prakash Singh said, "The facts of the encounter are not known.... Only an inquiry would establish whether what the police are saying is true or not."

"At present, I can only say that it was very unfortunate that an encounter took place because we were looking forward to Vikas Dubey being interrogated and then giving out the names of all those who were linked with him and patronising him and financing him," the former UP DGP Prakash Singh told ETV Bharat.

Asked, what he thinks if the UP police had prosecuted him and got the death penalty like the Nirbhaya case criminals, he said, "I wish they had made full proof arrangements for his transportation, then this kind of mishap would have not happened. I wish he had been dropped safely. I wish there was no need for an encounter of the kind which has happened."

The former UP DGP refused to comment on the sequence of the events leading to Vikas Dubey's encounter killing after an accident that took place in the morning near Kanpur and said I don't know the facts of this case and it is too early and it will too immature to comment on the merits of the encounter.

Vikas Dubey, a history-sheeter who faces about 60 criminal cases including murder and attempt to murder, was arrested in MP's Ujjain on Thursday from Mahakaleshwar Temple.

The gangster had been on run since July 3 when police to raid his village in Bikru, near, Kanpur. Since then, five if his aides had been killed at different locations.

As per the UP police, Vikas Dubey snatched the pistol from one of the four injured policemen and was injured in an encounter. Later, he was taken to the hospital and declared brought dead.

Notably, a petition filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday night had asked for security for the gangster Vikas Dubey and a CBI investigation into a series of encounter killings.
