The opposition Congress Party has alleged that law and order had collapsed in Uttar Pradesh as the Yogi Adityanath government had 'failed to protect women' in the state. The statement came after a Dalit gang-rape victim from Hathras passed away in a Delhi hospital on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday slammed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the Hathras gang-rape incident and termed the episode as a complete 'collapse of law and order' in the state.

This comes after reports surfaced of delay of eight days while registering a case against the accused in the brutal gang-rape in which a 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras, died this morning at Safdarjung hospital.

While addressing media, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, "Yogi Adityanath Government kept sitting for 8 days. Why was no action being taken against the culprits all these days? It was only when the case was highlighted that the administration woke up."

She also alleged that the police officials were in a denial mode over the crime during all these days and even dubbed it as 'fake news'.

"Why the victim was not immediately transferred to a premier institute like AIIMS for better treatment? Why the culprits have not been slapped with NSA charges? Why is UP CM in 'silent mode' over the brutal incident? When will this end? When will people of UP respect law and order?" she further asked.

Calling UP as the 'crime capital' of India, Supriya Shirnate mentioned that more than 300 BJP MLAs are facing charges of heinous crimes like murder and rape.

"I will also raise a question on absolute conspicuous silence of the Prime Minister and the women leaders of BJP, who at one point of time thought it's their moral duty to raise questions on crime against women. Today, when they are in charge of departments like that, are conspicuously silent. If you do not utter a word, you are very much hand in glove with what the criminals are doing," she added.

Earlier today, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit out at CM Yogi Adityanath alleging that there is 'no semblance of security' for women in UP.

She tweeted, "A Dalit girl who was the victim of demoniac behaviour in Hathras has passer away at Safdarjung Hospital. For two weeks, she struggled between life and death. Law and order in UP have deteriorated to a great extent. There is no semblance for the safety of women. Criminals are committing crimes in open."
