Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force on Wednesday killed an aide of gangster Vikas Dubey who was involved in an ambush in Kanpur last week in which eight policemen died, a senior official said.

Amar Dubey, who carried a reward of Rs 25,000, was killed in an encounter in Maudaha village in Hamirpur district, Special Task Force IG Amitabh Yash said.

According to STF sources, the police team had received a tip off about Amar's presence in the district and when they tried to close in on him, the criminal opened fire on them, He was killed in retaliatory firing around 6.30.a.m. 

"We asked him to surrender but he opened fire at us and was killed when we returned the fire," said an STF official.

Kanpur police on Tuesday released photos of accomplices of Kanpur encounter main accused and history-sheeter Vikas Dubey and also conducted a raid at the residence of Jai Bajpayee, a close aide of Dubey.

UP Police and ATS have not yet discovered anything about the whereabouts of Dubey. The bounty on the arrest of Dubey has been increased to Rs 2.5 lakhs.

Earlier on Monday, a sub-inspector and two constables of Uttar Pradesh police have been suspended in connection with the case.  

According to sources, all the policemen were in touch with Vikas Dubey, as was revealed by phone details. Sub-inspectors Kunwar Pal, Krishna Kumar Sharma and constable Rajeev have been suspended.  

Police have put up his posters at Unnao toll plaza and in Lakhimpur district near the India-Nepal border area.

Police issued alerts in Lakhimpur Kheri, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Bahraich and Gorakhpur to stop Vikas Dubey from escaping across the border intro Nepal.

IG Amitabh Thakur had sought an inquiry into the alleged closeness between Deo and Jai Bajpai, a frontman of gangster Dubey.

A video clip from 2017, apparently shot while Dubey was being interrogated by the STF after his arrest in Lucknow, has also appeared on social media. In the clip, the alleged gangster suggests he has links with two local BJP MLAs, Bhagwati Sagar and Abhijeet Sanga, and the district panchayat chief.

Vikas Dubey is the main accused in the Kanpur encounter case, in which he and his men allegedly opened fire on the police team which came to arrest him on Thursday late night, and eight policemen including circle officer Devendra Mishra were killed in the incident.
