Aligarh: After a report surfaced on Wednesday from Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district that a woman along with her five children was battling intense hunger for over two months, her neighbours said that they tried to extend help to the family but the woman never opened the door of her house fearing Covid-19.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, they said that people tried to go to Guddi Devi's house to help her out but she did not open the door. "Guddi never said to me that she has been starving along with her children. However, I used to occasionally give her Rs 50-100 along with rice and wheat," said Urmila Devi, an elderly woman who resides in Guddi's neighbourhood.

Another neighbour named Akash Kumar informed that he tried to admit the family to the hospital on May 27 but Guddi refused to go fearing Covid-19. He also added that none of her relatives came to visit and see how is she doing. Meanwhile, village head Veerpal Singh said that he had called two vehicles to take Guddi's family to the hospital but she did not go fearing her kidneys will be removed in the hospital. "I had helped her once by giving Rs 500 but she had this fear in her mind that if she goes to the hospital, she will get infected by Covid-19," he said.

It is worth mentioning here that Guddi, along with her children, were admitted to a hospital on Wednesday after a local NGO stepped in to help after it was informed of the family's condition. Guddi's husband had died last year during the lockdown imposed due to the first wave of the Covid pandemic. Her 20-year-old son was the sole earning member of the family, but he lost his job during the second wave of the pandemic this year.
