Hyderabad: Heavy overnight rain left several parts of Hyderabad flooded, days after the deadly downpour left at least 70 people dead and caused several damages in Telangana.
The India Meteorological Department has sounded yet another warning for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected at isolated places in Telangana on these days, as per the IMD’s forecast.
Following this, extreme levels of flood danger were announced in at least two places in the suburbs of Hyderabad. Lakes across the city and surrounding areas overflowed, inundating colonies as the excess water found its natural course to Musi river.
Meanwhile, scores of people were rescued and moved to safer locations by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)'s disaster response force (DRF) and police personnel. The GHMC also alerted all political leaders to take preventive measures in low lying areas.
Water levels receded by Sunday evening but not without leaving a trail of destruction behind. Heaps of slush along with organic and inorganic waste was deposited inside houses.
The worst scenes of devastation emerged from several places of the city, where motor vehicles were washed away by strong currents. The civic body also said its engineering wing and DRF teams are pumping out water from apartment cellars and inundated colonies.
According to an advisory, flooding and waterlogging are expected in many parts of low-lying areas in districts of Telangana. People in the affected areas have been advised to restrict their movement in view of the heavy rainfall prediction. Heavy rains have battered Hyderabad since Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction and killing at least 70 people in rain-related incidents.
According to IMD, heavy to very heavy rains in the upper Krishna Basin in Maharashtra and Karnataka, including in the catchment areas of several tributaries of Krishna are getting huge flood continuously to Jurala and Srisailam and it is forecast to increase further over the next couple of days.
Bhima, one of the major tributaries of the river Krishna, is in spate and has already crossed the record flood level at Deongaon bridge in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka. In Telangana, the impact of the severe cyclone that caused heavy rains is said to have reached Bhima river basins.
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) officials, the flood level in Bhima was 408.35 metres, which has the danger level of 404.5 metres.
All the projects in the Godavari Basin too are getting heavy inflows with the help of rains in Maharashtra and excess floodwaters being released at Singur, Nizamsagar, Sriramsagar, Mid Manair, Lower Manair, Yellampally and other projects.
