Hyderabad: A suspected Maoist rebel was shot dead by police in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district early on Thursday, police said.
The incident occurred during vehicle checks in Gundala Mandal at around 4.15 am, they said.
Bhadradri-Kothagudem District Superintendent of Police Sunil Dutt said surveillance was intensified in the district following inputs on Maoists movements.
He said the police was tipped-off about rebel movements on motorcycles in the area.
"Based on the information, vehicle checking was conducted by police. At around 4.15 am on Thursday police tried to stop two men on motorcycles," the officer said.
They tried to escape after firing at the police and one of them was killed in the return fire, police said.
The unidentified rebel was aged around 25, a weapon and a motorcycle were recovered from him.
Further investigations are on.
Two groups of Maoists members armed with AK-47 assault rifles had escaped after an exchange of fire with police in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district and Bhadradri-Kothagudem district in July this year.
