Hyderabad: Amid the ongoing counting for votes for the high-stakes Karnataka assembly election, counting is underway for five seats in the states of Meghalaya, Punjab, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh with AAP leading in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha by poll, sources said. The voting for two assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, one each in Meghalaya and Odisha and the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat in Punjab was held on May 10 when Karnataka also went to polls for the assembly election.
According to sources, ruling AAP was leading on the Jalandhar Lok Sabha by poll with the party having polled over 60,000 votes when reports last came in. Congress was at second spot with over 53000 votes followed by BJP with over 34000 votes and the Akali Dal which polled over 28000 votes. It can be recalled that the election for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha was necessitated after the death of sitting Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary, who died due to a cardiac arrest during the Rahul Gandhi led Bharat Jodo Yatra in January this year.
In Uttar Pradesh, where by polls were held on Chhanbey and Suar assembly seats, Samajwadi Party was leading in the former while as BJP ally Apna Dal was ahead in the latter seat. On Chhanbey seat, SP's Kirti Kol was leading with over 9000 votes when reports last came in. Apna Dal's Rinki Kol was at the 2nd spot with over 5800 votes.
On Suar seat, Apna Dal's Shafeek Ahmad Ansari was ahead with over 8000 votes when reports last came in. In Odisha, the ruling BJD was leading on the Jharsugada assembly seat with over 4000 vote margin. Counting is also going on for the Sohiong bypoll in Meghalaya.
