Coimbatore: In a bid to cope up with the shortage of medical supplies amid coronavirus pandemic, youth population of Kaniyur village situated in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu has come forward to produce face masks for the masses.
"Initially, the young people of the town were trained to make masks. So far, in the first phase 6000 masks have been supplied to the people of nearby Indranagar and Uthamapalayam villages in Coimbatore district", said Kaniyur Panchayat President K Velusamy, who is leading the initiative of making 20,000 face masks.
"Another 14,000 masks are in the process of making at a garment's company in the town. We are not only engaged in making masks but also delivering them door-to-door to the residents of 16 villages in Kaniyur Panchayat," said Velusamy, who had previously been engaged in various initiatives for the betterment of society.
Muthumariyappan, a differently-abled person from Kaniyur, who cannot go out to raise awareness about the disease, said," I have come forward and involved myself in making masks to keep people safe. This way I am doing my bit in the fight against coronavirus pandemic."
As per reports, villages in Kaniyur panchayat have been sanitised and only the younger ones from a family are being allowed to come out to buy essentials. In addition to this, outsiders are entirely prohibited in the villages and any person complaining of cold or fever is immediately being taken to a nearby government hospital.
Apart from this, all sort of preventive measures is being undertaken by various other panchayats and municipalities in Tamil Nadu to contain the spread of coronavirus.
