Chennai: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday unveiled a statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Kodambakkam on the occasion of his first death anniversary.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin was also present on the occasion.

Earlier in the day, Stalin along with other leaders of the party participated in a procession to the memorial of the late party patriarch at the Marina beach.

Former Defence Minister A K Antony also participated in the procession.

Karunanidhi, who was Tamil Nadu's longest-serving chief minister, breathed his last on August 7 last year at the age of 94 after a prolonged illness.

Last year on August 7, Former Tamilnadu chief minister and DMK leaderKarunanidhi (94) passed away. Karunanidhi was buried near to DMK ex chief C.N.Annadurai in Marina Beach. Today, on the first year death anniversary of Karunanidhi, West Bengal chief minister Mamtha Banarjee unveiled Karunanidhi statue at Murasoli office, DMK party's official newspaper. Mamtha shared the dais with Puducherry chief minister V Narayanaswamy, Dravidar Kazhgam leader Veeramani,Tamilnadu congress committee leader K.S Alagiri  and later she addresses a mega public gathering at YMCA grounds.
