Tuticorin Deaths: ASP & DSP kept on waiting list, Cop suspended

Tuticorin ASP Kumar and Sathankulam DSP Prathaban have been put on the waiting list in connection with alleged custodial deaths of a father-son.

Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu): In a major development in the Tuticorin father-son death case, Tuticorin ASP Kumar and Sathankulam DSP Prathaban have been put on the waiting list, while Constable Maharajan has been suspended, government order stated.

Jayaraj 59, and his son Bennicks 31 were running a cell phone shop at Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district.

On June 19, Jayaraj and his son Bennicks, arrested for allegedly violating lockdown norms on business hours of their cellphone shop. He died at a hospital in Kovilpatti on June 23, with the relatives alleging that they were severely thrashed at the Sathankulam police station by police personnel.

The death of the duo had sparked protests across parts of Tamil Nadu with many people taking to the streets to demand justice and the incident triggering outrage on social media. Following this, the High Court took up the case on Monday.

Kovilpatti judicial Magistrate Bharathidasan alleged that police personnel were not co-operating during the trail in Sathankulam for trial.

The judicial Magistrate mailed against police personnel, 'non-cooperation and derogatory remarks and threats'. After hearing this complaint, Tuticorin ASP Kumar and Sathankulam DSP Prathaban have been put on waiting List, while Constable Maharajan has been suspended.

Already 2 sub-inspectors and Inspector Sridhar were suspended on this issue.
