New Delhi: Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram LS seat DMK MP D Ravikumar on Friday urged the Union Government to give nod to induct doctors who have completed their courses in Russia and Armenia at this pandemic situation.

According to Ravikumar, hundreds of students from Tamil Nadu had completed MBBS in the recognised institutions of Russia and Armenia and unable to work in India.

“As our country's Medical Council of India (MCI) made a screening entrance exam mandatory for them to work as doctors here, many have failed to clear the entrance at the margin. Therefore, many of the students who completed MBBS in Russia and Armenia are working as assistants to doctors,” Ravikumar said.

He further added that those doctors can be inducted for treating COVID-19 patients.

“As there is a big scarcity for doctors to treat the COVID-19 victims, students who have MBBS from Russia and Armenia can be allowed to work for Government. In my constituency Villupuram, many SC/ST students have completed MBBS from Russia and Armenia and are unable to function as doctors here,” the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi General Secretary noted.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, one of such doctor on condition of anonymity said, "I have completed MBBS from an institute in Armenia in 2017. However, I am unable to clear the entrance here. I had scored 48%,but,50% is essential to clear the entrance. So, I am unable to function as a doctor and working as an assistant to a doctor. I will be much happy if the Government waives off certain criteria to make us render our service during this critical time.”
