Trichy (Tamil Nadu): Two masked robbers stole gold jewellery worth Rs 50 crore from Lalitha Jewellery store near Chathiram Bus Stand in Trichy in the wee hours of Wednesday.
According to sources, robbers gained entry into the store by drilling a hole in the wall at the backside of the showroom. They entered into the first floor of the store and decamped with gold and diamond jewels worth Rs 50 crore.
The incident came to light when the staff opened the store this morning. CCTV footage showed two men wearing fancy animal masks stealing gold ornaments. The theft happened between 2 am to 3 am.
Police are investigating the matter and are tracing phone calls made and received from last midnight to the wee hours of today around the showroom.
City Police Commissioner, Trichy, Amalraj visited the spot and conducted inquiries. Forensic experts were collecting samples from the spot and sources said some fingerprints have been obtained.
A case has been registered in this regard and special teams have been formed to nab the robbers.
