Man trying to smuggle gold from Chennai airport held

A man, who was allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth lakhs of rupees, arrested and 621 gram of gold, hidden in his footwear, was seized. Further investigation was on customs officials informed.

New Delhi: Customs officials have arrested a person from Chennai airport as he was trying to smuggle gold, official sources said on Tuesday.

They said the officials at the airport grew suspicious and stopped the traveler, who had come from Dubai, for checking.

"He was carrying 621 gram of gold hidden in his footwear," Customs Deputy Commissioner Aditya Yadav said, adding that it included a gold chain also. The gold, worth approximately Rs 27 Lakh, was seized and the man arrested, he added.
