Chennai: Customs officials in Chennai have arrested a man from Andhra Pradesh for importing Rs. 1.65 crore worth narcotic drugs via cargo plane which reached Chennai Airport from Dubai. They are also searching for a second person in this case.
Custom officials inspected the parcels from a cargo plane that arrived at Chennai Airport from Dubai. They were fishy about four parcels that came from the Netherlands and Belgium which consisted of processed fruits, food and medical supplies. They contacted the cellphone numbers on the parcels but the numbers were not in use.
The two parcels that arrived at the Foreign Post office in the city contained a total of 5210 ecstasy pills, 100 grams of MDMA crystals and 1 gram of Methaqualone, their combined value is believed to be $2,20,832. The contraband was seized under the NDPS Act, 1985.
Customs Officials are referring to the case as the biggest ever drug haul in the city.
Two parcels which came from the Netherlands had an address at Kancheepuram in Tamilnadu and two from Belgium had an address in Andhra Pradesh.
The officials who were already suspicious about the parcels broke them and were shocked to find the colossal amount of drugs like narcotics.
A group of officials said the Tamil Nadu address on the parcel was fake, but a youngster was arrested at the address in Andhra address.
The drugs were secretly imported and were supplied to students and youngsters. A single tablet is said to cost 5,000 rupees.
Similarly, a person who came on a special rescue plane from Singapore to Chennai Airport was arrested for smuggling 21 lakh rupees worth gold bar and is being investigated.
