New Delhi: Days after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin urged leaders across the country to show solidarity for ensuring the OBC reservation in Medical college admissions, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday wrote to the Tamil Nadu’s leader of opposition assuring that the national party will be committed to working for the educational advancement of OBC students.

The congress president, in her letter, had said that she is extending her support for the reservation of OBCs in the All India Quota (AIQ) for UG/PG courses in states/UG medical colleges, in accordance with the state reservation policy.

“On July 3, I had already urged the centre to extend the reservation for OBCs in AIQ in State/UT medical colleges. In a petition filed by the DMK and other parties, the Madras High Court had directed the States, Centre, Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India to resolve the OBC reservation issue in the UG/PG medical and dental admissions. The MHC had also asked the centre to take a decision on implementing the percentage of the reservation within three months,” Sonia Gandhi said in her letter to Stalin.

She also expressed her hope that the Central Government will consider providing OBC reservation under AIQ in accordance with the reservation policy.

The Congress leader also lamented that "the centre's denial of reservation of OBC candidates violates the spirit of equity and inclusion in higher education and threatens to undo progressive social justice policies.”

“The Congress party extends its support to the fight for the educational advancements of Backward Classes,” she concluded the letter.

Within hours after receiving the letter, Stalin thanked the Congress President and Congress party.
