Chinese ship on Thoothukudi port do not carry coronavirus threat: Official

A Chinese ship that arrived at the Thoothukudi port in Tamil Nadu arose fear among the residents of the city. Officials have, however, informed that the crew members were thoroughly checked for any kind of infection before being allowed into the port.

Tamil Nadu: Officers deployed at the Thoothukudi port have clarified that people need not worry about coronavirus outbreak from the Chinese cargo ships arriving at the port.

It was few days back when a cargo ship from China arrived at Thoothukudi's V. O. Chidambaranar Port as a result of which, unnecessary fear and chaos was caused in the area regarding cruise ship COVID-19 infections.

People feared that the virus may spread across the city via the crew members on the Chinese ship.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, an official from the Thoothukudi port said: "All the crew members of the ship had already undergone medical checkup before being allowed into the port. Everything is clear, there is no infection of coronavirus on the ship."

As of now, crew members have been advised to carry on the maintenance work inside the ship. Officers from Delhi were closely monitoring the situation.

"The Chinese ship left the Thoothukudi port today morning as the maintenance work it was undergoing was completed," the official added.

So farm around 69,000 confirmed case of coronavirus infections have been found across China according to the country's National Health Commission.

The death toll in mainland China from COVID-19 stands at 1,665.

The outbreak began in December in Wuhan, capital of the central Chinese province of Hubei.

Also, three cases of the infection have been found in India, all from Kerala.
