Bharat Decides: TN sees over 63% turnout amid EVM glitches

Curtains came down on polling in Tamil Nadu in 38 Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly constituencies, where by-elections were held on Thursday.

Chennai: Voting ended for the second phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 in 38 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and one seat in Puducherry.

In the second phase, 95 constituencies, across 12 states and 1 union territory goes on polls.

  • 5:45 PM - 63% voter turnout recorded till 5 pm in TN, 67% in Puducherry
    Till 5 pm, 63.73 per cent voter turnout recorded in Tamil Nadu, 67.5 per cent recorded in Puducherry.
  • 4:15 PM - 52% voter turnout recorded till 3 pm in TN, 57% in Puducherry
    Till 3 pm, 52.02 per cent voter turnout recorded in Tamil Nadu, 57.2 per cent recorded in Puducherry.

    Shocked to find her name missing from the voter list, a 74-year-old woman died at a polling booth in Chennai.

  • 11: 15 am- A 60-year-old man, Murugasan, fainted after casting vote at a polling booth in Sivagiri village in Erode district. He was declared dead at the hospital

  • 09: 51 am- Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) chief TTV Dinakaran cast his vote at a polling station in Besant Nagar in Chennai South parliamentary constituency

  • 09:01 am- DMK Lok Sabha candidate from Thoothukudi, Kanimozhi casts her vote at a polling station in Chennai's Alwarpet, says, "People in the opposition have been harassed, raids targeted at opposition candidates. BJP has completely taken over AIADMK"

Voter turnout till 9 am: 13.48 %

  • 08: 46 am- Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan and his daughter Shruti Haasan cast their votes at polling station 27 at Alwarpet Corporation School in Chennai
  • 08: 11 am- CM Edappadi K Palanisamy cast his vote at a polling station in Edappadi, Selam
  • 08: 07 am- Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan and his daughter Shruti Haasan queue up outside polling station 27 at Alwarpet Corporation School in Chennai to cast their votes
  • 07: 40 am- Nalini Chidambaram, Karti Chidambaram and his wife Srinidi Rangarajan casts their vote at a polling station in Karaikudi, Sivaganga
  • 07: 19 am- Actor turned politician Rajinikanth casts his vote at the polling station in Stella Maris College, in Chennai Central parliamentary constituency
  • 07: 15 am- Congress leader P Chidambaram casts his vote at a polling station in Karaikudi, Sivaganga

Among the total 39 seats, as the Election Commission has rescinded the polls for Vellore Lok Sabha constituency owing to the recent seizure of unaccounted cash by the Income Tax department.

It reportedly stated that the environment was not conducive for 'holding fair and free elections'.

Tamil Nadu will also be witnessing a 'mini assembly elections', as by-polls will be conducted for 22 assembly seats in the state.

Polling began on Thursday in the lone Puducherry Lok Sabha seat and in the Thattanchavady assembly constituency for which by-election is being held.

The voting began at 7 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m.

There are 18-candidates in the fray for the Puducherry Lok Sabha seat and their electoral fate will be decided by about 9.73 lakh voters.

The main fight is between Congress party candidate V. Vaithilingam and All India N.R. Congress party candidate Narayanasamy Kesavan.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam has fielded M.A.S. Subramanian.

In the by-election for the Thattanchavady assembly seat, there are eight candidates in the fray and the main fight is between All India N.R. Congress party candidate P. Nedounzejiane and DMK's K. Venkatesan.
