Namakkal: In a shocking incident, a five-year-old girl died after being harshly punished by her mother for indulging in mischief, in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu on Monday.
According to reports, five-year-old Lathika Sri was punished by her mother Kamala, a school teacher, for watching TV despite being told to study. An infuriated Kamala first brutally thrashed her daughter with the lid of a cooker, before making her stand outside for hours under the scorching Sun.
Lathika was initially taken to Namakkal Government Hospital after she collapsed on the ground, with several injuries all over her body. After her condition worsened, she was referred to the Salem Government Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries after hours of struggle.
Lathika was the only child of Pandian (37) and Kamala (35). According to neighbours, the latter was very strict and often handed out harsh punishments to her daughter.
Meanwhile, the police is currently questioning both the parents, and has said that the next course of action would be decided only after the postmortem of the deceased.
